Traditionally, the small family wine producers of Rioja Alavesa did not age their wines as they either sold it in bulk or in bottles (often without labels) to day-trippers from the Basque region. Also, the larger producers maintained a virtual cartel of Crianza and Reserva wines by demanding a minimum of 500 barrels to form part of their DO system. This blend of young fruity wines is a homage to the first wines of this region.
